Percolate. Brewing ideas with…., is an exploration of sustainability in the fields of arts, heritage and cultural management. March 21, 2013 | Janet Carding | Strategizing museums in the 21^st century

Janet Carding is Director and CEO of the Royal Ontario Museum, the first woman appointed to the position, and is responsible for furthering the Museum’s mission; advocating for its ongoing public and private support; promoting its research, programs, and collections; and overseeing the management of the Museum’s operations, which include exhibitions, programs, education, visitor services, administration and facilities management.

A museum professional for over two decades, Ms. Carding originally hails from England where she obtained her degree from Cambridge University in History and Philosophy of Science and a Masters from the University of London in History of Science and Medicine.

At Percolate, Ms. Carding explores challenging and exciting questions facing ROM as its centennial approaches: How do we reconcile the 19th Century model of the encyclopedic museum with the needs of today’s communities? What lessons are there for all cultural organizations, as we all deal with changing expectations from our audiences?

Doors for all Percolate events are at 6:30 p.m., with presentations at 7:00 p.m.

This series has been assisted by the Province of Alberta through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, its arts funding agency.

The Social Work of Museums

Museum scholar and author Lois H. Silverman joins Percolate 2012 for a discussion of her work The Social Work of Museums (Routledge, 2010).

Museums may not seem at first glance to be engaged in social work. Yet, as a growing body of visitor studies, international practice trends, and compelling examples reveal, museums everywhere are using their unique resources to meet human needs, benefit relationships, and ultimately, repair the world. Informed by social workers, social agencies, and clients, museums are helping people cope and even thrive in a remarkable range of circumstances. What is the growing evidence base for this emerging new age of museum service? How is the field of social work essential to museums in the 21^st century and beyond? Join Lois for an exploration of these questions as we consider the foundations and future of this exciting interdisciplinary practice.

Lois H. Silverman is an independent scholar, project innovator, and consultant to social agencies and to museums around the world. A leader in the field of museums studies, she is widely known for her research on museum visitors, and for her federally funded Museums as Therapeutic Agents projects. She holds a PhD from the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania, and an MSW from Indiana University School of Social Work. Her previous publications include The Therapeutic Potential of Museums (1998) and Transforming Practice (2000).
